Avamis, used against allergies, is a hormonal drug. Its pharmacological effect is expressed by the anti-inflammatory effect of the synthetic glucocorticosteroid - fluticasone furoate. One dose of spray contains 27.5 mcg of active substance.
This medicine was developed and approved for use recently and actively relieves allergic rhinitis and other seasonal diseases. In addition, the drug has some advantages over other antihistamines: early use of Avamis allows you to get a lasting positive result.
The spray quickly relieves swelling of the nasal mucous membranes, helps reduce mucus from the nasal cavity and, most importantly, alleviates the general condition of the patient's body. Avamis is effective even in advanced disease and in the event of allergic complications.
The spray contains components that serve to facilitate its entry into the nasal mucosa and enhance hormonal absorption. These include: polysorbates, dextrose, cellulose, non-alkonium chloride and disodium edetate.
pharmachologic effect
After the aerosol microparticles settle on the inside of the nose, a drop of fluticasone furoate is partially absorbed. This contributes to small systemic effects of the drug on the entire patient’s body.
The metabolic phase of Avamys involves the liver. After this, almost all the drug and its components are excreted in the feces. The remaining 2% of the drug is excreted by the kidneys in the urine. Numerous studies of the drug have not revealed any effects on certain categories of patients based on gender or age.
In people with functional failure of the liver and kidneys, the spray does not cause a negative effect either on the designated organs or on the entire body. However, with the simultaneous use of a dose of 400 mcg in the treatment of allergies, the concentration of the active substance in plasma may increase. The usual dosage of -110 mcg does not cause negative effects. A pathological change in the functioning of the kidneys is not able to reduce the production of the synthetic hormone in the spray.
Avamys does not require dose adjustment for elderly patients, as it rarely exceeds the concentration in the blood. Intranasal use of the spray in childhood for the treatment of allergic rhinitis should not exceed 110 mcg. This dosage is taken once over 24 hours and is completely eliminated from the blood plasma.
How does Avamis work?
Avamys is available in the form of a nasal spray and is a local glucocorticosteroid (hormonal) drug. Due to the administration of Avamys by injection onto the nasal mucosa, the drug is not completely absorbed, and its systemic effect on the liver and the body as a whole is insignificant. However, it is not advisable for patients with liver dysfunction to use this drug due to the likelihood of a toxic effect.
Allergic rhinitis
The mechanism of action is based on the anti-inflammatory effect of glucocorticosteroids. Spraying the drug into the nasal cavity leads to the interaction of the active substance of the drug (fluticasone furoate) with inflammatory factors (for example, histamine). Suspending the production of these factors allows you to quickly relieve swelling. The drug is used mainly to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
Reducing the production of inflammatory factors helps relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as burning of the mucous membrane, nasal congestion (due to swelling and hypersecretion of secreted mucus), lacrimation, and redness of the eyes. Due to the fact that the active substance of the drug remains associated with the receptors of the nasal cavity throughout the day, one use of the drug per day is enough to achieve the effect.
The drug has high bioavailability (in practice this means a quick and strong effect); with normal liver function, it is completely metabolized in it and converted into an inactive compound. Avamys forms a stable compound with blood proteins, and therefore its concentration in plasma is controlled and predictable. The drug is excreted along with bile (in feces).
Avamis is a hormonal anti-inflammatory drug. Thanks to the local use of the drug, it is devoid of the disadvantages inherent in systemic hormonal drugs, effective and safe for use.
Indications for use
Indications for the use of an aerosol drug are the following symptoms:
The appearance of year-round or seasonal rhinitis in adult patients and children over 2 years of age, when drops do not have the desired effect.
The appearance of adenoids, requiring the removal of swelling of the nasal mucosa.
In addition, Avamis can be prescribed for any diseases accompanied by copious mucus secretion from the nasal passages.
Composition (main active ingredient – fluticasone furoate) and release form of the product
Avamis is produced by a well-known pharmacological company in the UK.
Release form: spray. The active ingredient is fluticasone furoate. The following are included as excipients:
- purified water;
- benzalkonium chloride;
- glucose;
- disodium edetate;
- polysorbate 80;
- dispersed cellulose.
The main active ingredient stops inflammatory processes. The spray quickly reaches the nasal mucosa, affects the receptors of the analyzers, as a result of which it does not allow an allergic reaction to manifest itself. It is thanks to this that it is possible to quickly overcome symptoms such as:
- itching;
- edema;
- the appearance of irritation;
- runny nose, nasal congestion.
Avamis helps restore normal respiratory functions during nasal congestion, and has not only an anti-inflammatory, but also a decongestant effect. The effect of the drug is long-lasting (up to 24 hours). After this, the drug is completely eliminated from the body.
This is a nasal spray, its active substance is fluticasone furoate. Has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect. Refers to synthetic hormones - glucocorticosteroids. Their peculiarity is a high degree of similarity to human hormones that are produced by the adrenal glands.
This ensures the effectiveness of the medication: the active substance penetrates the mucosal cells and stimulates the production of substances that can block the allergic reaction.
The medicine is available in the form of a spray. Contained in bottles that differ in volume (30, 60 and 120 doses). The orange bottle is placed in a plastic case with a sprayer, with which the drug is used in doses (27.5 mcg of the substance per dose, contained in one injection).
The main active ingredient is fluticasone furoate, at a dosage of 27.5 µg. Among the auxiliary elements in the product are destrose, cellulose, polysorbate, purified water and others.
Release form: spray. Method of application: nasal. Consists of a homogeneous white solution. It goes on sale in various dosages (from 30 to 120 ml per package).
Contraindications
The following manifestations are contraindications to the use of Avamis:
- increased susceptibility to the drug and its components;
- chronic kidney diseases;
- The nasal aerosol should not be used in children under two years of age. It is better for such children to use special anti-allergy drops;
- should be used with caution during pregnancy, except in cases where the potential risks are justified by expediency;
- Avamis should not be prescribed for frequent nosebleeds, as the drug affects the mucous membrane.
In addition, the drug is not prescribed after operations in the nasal cavity and wound injuries.
How to prepare for using the drug?
Medical experts say that proper preparation for using the spray will ensure that the required dose of the drug is injected. Therefore, after you have purchased the medicine at the pharmacy, follow these rules:
- Shake the spray bottle thoroughly (this is necessary to give the medicine a liquid consistency, optimal for injection into the sinuses).
- Point the tip of the bottle to the side, while holding it vertically.
- At the next stage, make a few test presses.
It is recommended to carry out similar manipulations when you have forgotten and left the bottle of spray open after the last dose!
Side effects
The use of anti-allergy aerosol in some cases can cause a number of side effects, which include:
- the appearance of moderate or mild nosebleeds. Most often, this side effect can occur when using the spray for more than 1.5 months;
- the occurrence of hyperemic rash and skin itching;
- sudden development of an allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock and Quincke's edema);
- In addition, in children, prolonged use of the spray can cause retardation in physical development. Therefore, if there is a need for long-term treatment using Avamis, it is important to monitor physical parameters and timely measure the baby’s growth. When registering lags in anthropometric indicators, the dose must be reduced to the minimum that will have the desired effect or the medicine must be completely discontinued.
The attending physician can prescribe the use of an aerosol by pregnant women only if there is a potential danger to the woman, taking into account the possible risks for the unborn baby. If necessary, during lactation Avamis can be prescribed in a minimum dosage or replaced with special drops.
Instructions
The nasal spray should be used by spraying into each nostril one at a time.
- Children over 12 years of age, as well as adult patients, should use 2 injections of Avamis once a day;
- Children aged 6 - 11 years are recommended to spray one aerosol once every 24 hours. In case of insufficient effectiveness, the dose can be increased up to two times, however, after achieving the desired result, it is necessary to switch to a single dose of the aerosol;
- For children under 2 years of age, the use of Avamis is strictly contraindicated! Only drops are allowed. This is due to possible complications that may develop during aerosol injection. A child at this age is not able to hold his breath when the drug is administered, as required by the drug label. Therefore, the nasal spray can penetrate the trachea, bronchi, and also the esophagus. In addition, the drug can provoke the development of eustachitis and otitis media;
- despite its positive dynamics, the medicine is a hormonal agent and in children under two years of age it can disrupt the hormonal balance;
- For patients over 60 years of age, as well as for complicated renal diseases, there is no need to adjust the dosage.
With reduced functionality in the liver, the number of doses is selected with the help of the attending physician after a biochemical diagnostic examination. The treatment course is determined by the time of exposure to the toxic effects of the allergy on the patient’s body.
The drug is ineffective as a prophylactic agent.

Sprayer care
Care of the drug
Avamis is available in bottles for 30, 60 and 120 doses. This dosage involves using the drug for a long time, and in order for the drug to be sprayed evenly and have the maximum possible effect, care for its sprayer is necessary.
After each use of the drug, it is necessary to wipe the sprayer and the inner surface of the cap with a dry, clean cloth. Avoid getting water or other liquids into the spray bottle. If liquid gets inside the atomizer, you need to wipe it and leave it for a while without the protective cap, and then try to activate it by pressing. Do not try to clean the nozzle opening with sharp objects such as a pin or toothpick.
Always close the sprayer with the protective cap after use and cleaning. This will prevent the atomizer from clogging with dust and moisture, and will ensure its tightness, and therefore the safety of the composition of the drug.
Sometimes the spray gun may not work. If the amount of liquid in the bottle is sufficient, check the integrity of the bottle. Make sure the sprayer is not clogged. Try shaking the bottle for a few seconds, remove the protective cap and forcefully activate the sprayer. Press at least 6 times - a cloud of liquid should appear above the spray bottle.
Avoid mechanical damage to the sprayer and take care of the tip after use - this will prevent the growth of bacteria on its surface and maintain long-term performance.
Medical supervision
Avamis is dispensed from pharmacies with a doctor's prescription. This drug is prescribed to some categories of patients with caution, so they are required to pay maximum attention to their well-being while using the drug. These are patients with severe and moderate liver dysfunction, a history of allergies to medications, concomitant use with drugs containing rinotavir, pregnant women and children under 6 years of age.
For these patients, the drug is prescribed extremely rarely and only if the expected benefit from it is higher than the expected harm. The drug can be used by people driving vehicles and working at work requiring high concentration of attention.
When using Avamis, special medical supervision is necessary for a relatively narrow circle of patients with the listed characteristics of the body. The drug does not affect performance and does not cause drowsiness.
Rules for using nasal spray
Avamis is available in a stylish plastic can, reminiscent of deodorant. First of all, you should check the level of the medicine in the container. There is a special window for this. If the required amount of spray is present, the following steps can be followed.
- On the side of the bottle, one side is equipped with a special valve, which, when pressed, sprays an aerosol;
- Before using the aerosol for allergies, as well as if the bottle has not been used for more than 30 days, it is necessary to check its functionality. To do this, you need to thoroughly shake the can for 10-15 seconds without removing the cap. Then, having removed the cap, you need to press the spray valve several times until an air stream appears;
- First of all, you need to clear your nose of mucus, then tilt your head slightly forward and insert the nozzle into the nasal passages one at a time. It should be taken into account that the tip should be directed to the outer nasal wall, and not to the nasal septum;
- Next, you need to take a deep, slow breath while simultaneously pressing the can to spray the drug. Exhalation after inhalation should be done through the mouth. This procedure is repeated for the second half of the nose;
- The Avamis bottle should always be tightly closed and protected from dust and dirt. Avoid contact of the spray with the mucous membranes of the eyes. If the drug gets into the eyes, rinse with clean water;
- After the procedure, wipe the tip with a dry napkin or cloth. Under no circumstances should you clean it with sharp objects. This may damage the tip and make it impossible to spray the product.
The primary effect of using Avamis develops after 6-8 hours from the first session. The maximum medicinal effect occurs after 3-4 days of regular use of the aerosol.
Features of application
When treating a child, parents are interested in how often Avamis can be used for children. The spray, like any other hormonal agent, has a cumulative effect. It must be used regularly, according to the instructions, to achieve a therapeutic effect, which begins 8 hours after administration.
Please note that maximum effects are seen after a few days of regular use, which is why it is important to take it over a long period. Do not be afraid that this is a hormonal medicine: it acts locally, is not addictive and is eliminated from the body in the shortest possible time. Usually, the course of treatment with this drug is limited to the period of action of the allergen on the body.
Parents are often interested in the possibility of replacing Avamis for children with cheaper analogues. It is worth noting that in comparison with similar drugs, the one described is one of the most affordable, therefore, if you have been prescribed it, it is not advisable to look for a cheaper replacement.
Nasonex spray is also a well-known remedy for allergic rhinitis. Questions arise, which is better for a child: Avamis or Nasonex? Their scope of application is the same, but the active substance is different, so the decision on the possibility of replacing the product can be made exclusively by the attending physician.
Analogs
Avamis has no analogues in its structure. However, there are medications that are similar in their therapeutic effect. These include:
