The reputation of ragweed as an allergen is widely known, but there is an equally dangerous enemy of allergy sufferers - wormwood. Being a weed, it is widespread and the likelihood that an allergy to wormwood will manifest itself in patients with a reactive immune system, in children and pregnant women is very high

Wormwood (Artemisia vulgaris) causes seasonal hay fever, hay fever and food allergies.

Allergy to wormwood

Causes of allergies

Wormwood is a weedy perennial plant. You can see it near bodies of water, in vacant lots, along roads. The flowering period lasts from the beginning of June to the end of August. The concentration of the weed is highest in the southern regions. The most common types of plants are wormwood and common wormwood (chernobyl).

During the flowering season, pollen is carried by the wind over a distance of up to 5 km, reaches human mucous membranes and penetrates the respiratory tract . The compounds that make up pollen may be perceived by the body as foreign. It “turns on” the immune response. Immunoglobulin E and the mediator histamine begin to be produced in large quantities, as a result of which the capillaries expand. Swelling of the mucous membranes develops, a rash appears on the skin, and the person suffers from cough, runny nose, watery eyes and other allergy symptoms.

Allergens can be:

  • protein compounds W5 and W6;
  • tannins;
  • alcohols;
  • resins;
  • essential oils;
  • ascorbic acid, etc.

Factors that increase the likelihood of developing intolerance:

  1. Heredity. Children with allergies have a 70% chance of also being susceptible to this disease. Only a predisposition is transmitted, not a specific type of allergy.
  2. A person suffers from chronic diseases.
  3. He is already allergic to something.
  4. There are bad habits.
  5. A person lives in an area where wormwood is ubiquitous.

About the diet for allergies to tree pollen

First of all, these tips relate to diets for allergies to pollen from birch, hazelnut (hazel), maple (all types), elm, oak and alder.

So, limit the consumption of sugar, jam, cookies, sweets, chocolate, cocoa, ice cream, any cold drinks, including alcohol (hot alcohol is also not needed!), marinades, pickles, smoked foods, especially smoked sausages.

It is not recommended to drink cognac, birch sap, herbal teas containing birch leaves or buds, or alder “cones”.

You should not add nuts to your diet (except for peanuts, which are not really nuts), honey, new potatoes and carrots, apples, peaches, apricots, any “strawberries”, cherries, cherries.

You will ask, if not shout: “What is possible?!” You can eat:

porridges, cereal casseroles; bread, pasta; dishes made from lean meat, meat and vegetable soups, as well as borscht - preferably lean, with the addition of sunflower oil; scrambled and boiled eggs; beans, peas, peanuts; sour cream, low-fat cottage cheese; cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, radishes, beets, last year's potatoes.

milk, fermented baked milk, yogurt, kefir; weak tea (try with lemon - many people like this if they are not particularly allergic to citrus fruits), weak coffee with milk, just water - not from the tap, of course, mineral water.

Cross allergy

This is a reaction to compounds similar to the main allergen. The symptoms will be similar. If there is an allergy to wormwood, then the body may react negatively to ragweed, chamomile, chrysanthemum, tarragon, and dandelions.

It is better not to eat:

  • vegetables: potatoes, tomatoes, celery, carrots, artichokes;
  • fruits: apples, melons and watermelons, mangoes, lychees, kiwi;
  • peanuts, sunflower seeds;
  • spices and seasonings: black and chili pepper, paprika, cinnamon, curry, garlic, dill, parsley, ginger, marjoram, basil, anise, oregano, thyme, coriander;
  • drinks (absinthe and vermouth).

It should also be taken into account that wormwood can be part of medicines and cosmetics.

Allergens

Illustration: Wormwood
A large number of allergens have been characterized. Here are some of them:

  • Art v 1 – defensin, the main allergen ,
  • Art v 2 – 34-48 kDa protein,
  • Art v 3 – lipid transfer protein,
  • Art v 4 – profilin,
  • Art v 5 – calcium binding protein,
  • Art v 6 – pectate lyase.

In addition to them, wormwood also contains other allergens that require further research.

Symptoms

Wormwood is highly allergenic, so allergic symptoms can appear within a few minutes after contact with the plant.

Characteristic:

  • redness of the conjunctiva, swelling of the eyelids, a feeling of “sand” in the eyes, severe lacrimation;
  • difficulty breathing, runny nose, itching and swelling of the nasal mucosa, sneezing;
  • dry cough, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing (it feels like there is a foreign object in the throat), chest pain;
  • skin manifestations - swelling, hyperemia, urticaria, blisters, dryness and itching of the skin;
  • with food allergies also - burning and itching in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, flatulence, upset stool;
  • sleep disturbance, chronic fatigue, headache, apathy;
  • occasionally - the development of anaphylaxis and angioedema - dangerous conditions requiring immediate medical attention.

If the disease is not treated, the development of allergic bronchial asthma is possible. This is a severe pathology, which is accompanied by shortness of breath, spasms in the bronchi, heaviness behind the sternum, and wheezing.

Development of bronchial asthma

During pregnancy, immunity usually decreases due to hormonal changes in the body, so allergic symptoms may manifest themselves more intensely and cause more discomfort. The main symptoms are often accompanied by fever, lethargy, and nagging headaches. Food allergies are especially dangerous because they can cause poisoning and dehydration.

If an allergen enters the body of a small child, the most characteristic symptoms are observed:

  • profuse skin rashes, swelling, redness of the skin and mucous membranes;
  • temperature increase;
  • disruption of the gastrointestinal tract, colic, abdominal pain;
  • tearfulness, lethargy, sleep disturbance.

In children, the immune system is not yet fully developed, so the disease is more severe and the likelihood of it developing into bronchial asthma is higher. The allergen can reach the baby through the mother's milk (if she consumes products with cross-reaction), as well as when using hygiene products with wormwood extract. As they grow older, it is likely that in some children, due to the strengthening of the immune system, allergic symptoms will weaken and eventually disappear completely.

Preventive actions

As mentioned above, treatment of allergies is by no means limited to the use of medications. First of all, it is necessary to ensure the elimination of the allergen. In addition, it is important to lead a hypoallergenic lifestyle. Eating if you are allergic to wormwood should also be conscious and correct. How to avoid worsening an allergic reaction? The following recommendations must be followed:

  • do not go outside in windless, dry weather or on hot days;
  • try to walk after rain, during wind, early in the morning;
  • ventilate the room only when it rains;
  • install a good ventilation and air conditioning system, use HEPA or ULPA filters;
  • frequently carry out wet cleaning, use vacuum cleaners with filters;
  • do not use cosmetics, perfumes, essential oils containing wormwood;
  • stop smoking;
  • If you are allergic to wormwood, you must follow a diet.

If you have an allergic reaction to wormwood, can you drink propolis?

About half of propolis consists of various aromatic acids and their esters, flavonoids, and pollen is also present in it. Therefore, it is likely that just as hypersensitivity to wormwood cross-reacts with honey, so it will with propolis. However, this is not an axiom, and after consulting a doctor, you can try to introduce a minimum dose of propolis into your diet.

Is it possible to get a dog if you are allergic to wormwood?

If you have any allergic disease, it is recommended to adhere to a hypoallergenic lifestyle, which includes: implies a refusal to keep animals. However, if it is not possible to avoid the appearance of a pet, it is necessary to bathe it more often with special shampoos, keep it out of the bed and bedroom, use air-purifying filters, do wet cleaning daily, and be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after each contact with the animal.

Can pepper patch be used if you are allergic to wormwood?

Not recommended, since red pepper is one of the cross-allergens for wormwood. And due to the fact that this is a rather aggressive product, it can cause a “double blow” to the skin.

Diet for allergies

The diet for hay fever based on wormwood has the largest list of restrictions. All products containing the plant should be excluded, including:

  • absinthe;
  • vermouth;
  • tea with wormwood;
  • tarragon.

In addition, you should be especially careful when consuming foods on the list of cross-allergens (described above).

It is also not recommended to use:

  • mayonnaise;
  • mustard;
  • zucchini;
  • eggplant;
  • beets;
  • carrot;
  • lettuce;
  • Jerusalem artichoke;
  • chicory;
  • honey;
  • watermelons;
  • oranges;
  • grapefruits;
  • lemons;
  • tangerines;
  • peas;
  • nuts;
  • absinthe;
  • vermouth;
  • anise;
  • coriander;
  • caraway;
  • curry.

As with birch, not all of these products are absolutely contraindicated. The possibility of their use depends on the individual characteristics of the allergic person’s immune system, the severity of the allergy, and the treatment used.

It is worth noting that the likelihood of developing oral allergic syndrome is high, but not one hundred percent, so it is possible to introduce one “representative” of cross-allergens into the diet.

If a reaction does not develop to the minimum dose of the allergen, you can increase it, but not much (for example, one orange per week).

Approximately 25% of patients with wormwood allergy report subsequent food hypersensitivity (in descending order):

  • honey and royal jelly,
  • sunflower seeds,
  • daisies,
  • pistachios,
  • hazelnut,
  • salad,
  • beer,
  • almond,
  • peanut,
  • other nuts,
  • carrot,
  • apple.

The menu of a child with allergies requires special attention and should be discussed with a nutritionist and allergist. It is important that while trying to eliminate all allergens, you do not create a calorie, nutrient or nutrient deficiency in your child’s diet. Therefore, each excluded product must be replaced.

Among other things, it is advisable, at least during the period of exacerbation, to follow a general gentle diet with the exception of “aggressive” foods - alcohol, fast food, highly allergenic foods, spicy, fried, fatty foods.

Diagnostics

A blood test is prescribed to check the level of immunoglobulin E. Its increased amount confirms that in this case it is an allergy and not another disease with similar symptoms, for example, a cold. The analysis also allows you to identify a specific allergen. The results will have to wait several days, but even infants can do such a study.

Skin tests are also prescribed for adults and children over 3 years of age. An application is made or the suspected allergen is injected under the skin in a tiny dosage. If it is determined correctly, redness, swelling, and itching will appear within 20 minutes. The method is used during remission of the disease.

Treatment

The methods and duration of therapy are determined by the doctor. Both the use of medications and lifestyle adjustments are necessary.

Diet

You should not eat foods that cause a cross-reaction to wormwood. It is also better not to eat highly allergenic foods: citrus fruits, chocolate, nuts, honey, fast food, canned food, smoked foods, hot sauces, seafood, carbonated drinks, etc.

What is allowed:

  • cereals;
  • legumes;
  • bakery and pasta products;
  • fermented milk products;
  • eggs;
  • lean meat;
  • vegetable broth soups;
  • fruits and vegetables not included in the prohibited list.

Allergens are partially neutralized during heat treatment. Therefore, during the period of remission, you can try eating boiled, stewed, etc. foods in small quantities and carefully monitor how the body reacts.

Drug therapy

Can be assigned:

  1. To relieve allergic symptoms - antihistamines - Loratadine, Claritin, Telfast, Tavegil, Zirtek, Fenistil, Aleron, Erius, etc. The decision on the possibility of using antihistamines in pregnant and lactating women in each specific case is made only by a specialist.
  2. To eliminate rashes and itching - Fenistil-gel, Gistan, Soventol, Lorinden, Bepanten, Advantan, Dermovate, Panthenol, etc.
  3. Eye drops – Cromohexal, Ketotifen, Allergodil, Azelastine, etc.

  5. Sorbents are drugs that remove allergen from the body - Polysorb, Atoxil, Pipolfen, Smecta, Enterosgel, etc.

Polysorb

ASIT

This is an effective method for treating allergies. The patient is administered the allergen in small quantities, the body gradually gets used to it and reacts less acutely. The therapy is long-term, can last several years, but gives good results.

Traditional methods

They serve as an addition to the main therapy, but do not replace it completely. They must be approved by a doctor, since it is possible that an individual allergic reaction may occur and, as a result, a deterioration in well-being.

Recipes:

  1. 1 tsp. alternately brew 0.5 liters of boiling water, leave for half an hour. Drink during the day.
  2. 1 tsp. horsetail pour 200 boiling water. Cool, strain, drop into nose.
  3. Place 200 g of washed oats in a thermos, pour boiling milk (2 l), and leave for 6-8 hours. Drink the strained infusion at any time.
  4. Half an hour before meals, 3-4 times a day, dissolve a piece of sugar soaked in a few drops of dill oil.
  5. Make lotions, take baths with a decoction of string, oak bark, St. John's wort, celandine, sage.
  6. Peel 3-4 onions, cut in half and place overnight in 1 liter of cool water. Drink the infusion throughout the day in several doses.

Diets for hay fever

It is especially important to follow a hypoallergenic diet during the dusting period of causative plants, when the allergenic load on the body increases many times over.

90% of people suffering from hay fever have cross-intolerance to foods that have allergens similar to pollen. It is better to exclude these products from your daily diet.

Hypoallergenic diet for tree pollen allergies

Trees in Russia generate dust between March and May. At this time, it is recommended to exclude from the diet:

  • Birch juice;
  • nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds) and food products containing them;

  • apples, pears, kiwi;
  • carrot;
  • herbs and spices (celery, curry, anise, cumin);
  • honey and bee products;
  • alcoholic drinks (many of them have high allergenic properties, and they cannot be combined with antihistamines).

Cross-reactions to potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions are possible.

Among herbal remedies, the use of birch leaves, birch buds, alder cones, buckthorn bark, and ramnil is prohibited.

Hypoallergenic diet for allergies to grass pollen

The period of dusting of cereal grasses occurs in June-July with the end of May and beginning of August. At this time, it is recommended to exclude from the diet:

  • beer, kvass;
  • strawberries, wild strawberries, citrus fruits;
  • soybeans, beans, peanuts;
  • corn;
  • sorrel;
  • honey and bee products;
  • alcoholic drinks (many of them have high allergenic properties, and they cannot be combined with antihistamines).

If a food allergy to grains is detected, it is recommended to exclude cereals and pasta, bread and bakery products, as well as oats, wheat, rye, barley, rice and products that contain flour made from them (schnitzels, cutlets, gravies, sauces) .

Among herbal remedies, the use of all cereal herbs is prohibited.

Hypoallergenic diet for pollen allergies

Weeds (compositae and goosefoot) grasses produce dust at the end of summer - from late July to September-October.

During this period it is recommended to exclude:

  • sunflower seeds, sunflower oil, as well as sunflower halva, mustard, mayonnaise;
  • chicory;
  • melons: melons, watermelons;
  • herbs and spices (celery, parsley, dill, cumin, curry, pepper, anise, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, coriander);
  • honey and bee products;
  • alcoholic drinks, especially those prepared using wormwood and related plants: absinthe, vermouth, balms (many of them have high allergenic properties, and they cannot be combined with antihistamines).

Reactions to citrus fruits, bananas, garlic, carrots are possible. If you are allergic to goosefoot pollen (quinoa), it is recommended to exclude beets and spinach.

Among herbal remedies, the use of wormwood, chamomile, calendula, coltsfoot, string, elecampane, yarrow, tansy, and dandelion is prohibited.

Prevention

An allergy sufferer should know what to do to reduce the likelihood of allergies:

  1. Strictly follow the prescribed diet.
  2. Pay attention to the composition of ready-made dishes, as well as cosmetics.
  3. If possible, avoid where the plant grows.
  4. Do not walk in dry, hot and windy weather. It's best to go outside after it rains.
  5. Do not dry clothes outside to avoid pollen getting on them.
  6. It is necessary to close the windows in the house, install nets on them and wipe the frames and glass with a wet rag more often. It is recommended to use air conditioners, filters, and humidifiers indoors.
  7. It is important to carry out wet cleaning regularly.
  8. When going outside, you should wear sunglasses and a medical mask. After a walk, you need to wash your face and rinse your nose with saline solution. It is advisable to take a shower and change clothes.
  9. If pets are taken outside, they need to be washed after each walk, as pollen settles on the fur.

Hay fever is a serious pathology. Strict adherence to doctor’s instructions and self-discipline will help minimize negative symptoms and control the disease, as well as avoid more serious consequences.
