Kestin: instructions for use, price and analogues. Reviews

To effectively combat allergies and their manifestations, many medications have been developed, the therapeutic effect of which is to block histamine H1 receptors. The second-generation antiallergic drug “Kestin” (international nonproprietary name - ebastine) belongs to the middle price category.

Since the active ingredient ebastine is contained only in Kestin, there are no analogues of this drug similar in structure to it. In different countries, ebastine is produced under various names, including Aleva, Ebastine, Ebatrol, Evastin, Kestine and others. The drug has good reviews.

Compound

Various dosage forms of Kestin have the following composition:

  • Kestin tablets in a film shell - 1 tablet contains 20 mg of the active substance ( ebastine ) and excipients: magnesium stearate , microcrystalline cellulose , pregelatinized corn starch , lactose monohydrate croscarmellose sodium , hypromellose, titanium dioxide , macrogol 6000 ; the shell composition includes: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, polyethylene glycol 6000, titanium dioxide;
  • Kestin tablets in a film shell - 1 tablet contains 10 mg of the active substance ( ebastine ) and excipients and the composition of the shell is the same as in 20 mg tablets;
  • Kestin lyophilized (for resorption in the oral cavity) – 1 tablet contains 20 mg of the active substance ( ebastine ) and excipients: gelatin , mannitol , aspartame , mint flavor ;

  • Round lyophilized (for resorption in the oral cavity) white tablets. Available in cardboard packaging of 10 pieces in one blister.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

The active ingredient of the drug ebastine blocks H1-histamine receptors located in tissues, which suppresses the reaction of organs and tissues to histamine . H1-histamine receptors are located in the smooth muscles of internal organs and the walls of blood vessels. By interacting with these receptors, histamine causes contraction of the smooth muscles of these organs, increases vascular permeability, stimulates the formation and secretion of mucus by the glands of the nasal cavity, as well as biologically active substances involved in the development of allergic reactions.

Ebastine prevents and weakens all effects caused by histamine, prevents the development of allergic edema, reduces redness, burning and itching, that is, it prevents the development and facilitates the course of allergic reactions. The mechanism of action of ebastine is competition with histamine for interaction with H1-histamine receptors of organs and tissues. And since ebastine’s affinity for them is less pronounced than that of histamine, it does not displace the latter, but interacts only with free or released receptors. Therefore, ebastine works better as a prophylactic agent, and when an allergic reaction has already begun, it is not so effective.

Like all H1-histamine receptor , this drug has a fairly high degree of affinity for H1-histamine receptors , which provides a rapid therapeutic effect: after oral administration, the effect of the drug occurs within an hour and lasts 48 hours. After the course of treatment, the aftereffect of the drug lasts for another three days due to the fact that the active metabolic products (metabolites), into which ebastine decomposes in the liver, are gradually eliminated from the body. Excretion of ebastine metabolites occurs through the kidneys.

Pharmacological group, generation

The main effect of the drug is antiallergic and antihistamine. The active effect of the drug is observed 1 hour after use and lasts 48 hours. If drug therapy lasts 5 days, the effect of this drug will last another 72 hours. Rapidly absorbed and metabolized in the liver.

When taken simultaneously with food, carebastine levels increase. This does not accelerate the effect of the drug. The clinical effect also does not depend on this. Pharmacokinetic parameters do not depend on the age category of patients. The histamine blocker belongs to the group of piperidine derivatives and belongs to the 4th generation of drugs.

Indications for use of Kestin

Treatment is carried out for the following diseases and conditions:

  • with allergic seasonal or year-round runny nose or conjunctivitis caused by any allergens;
  • for urticaria and Quincke's edema caused by any allergens, as well as physical factors (solar radiation, overheating, cold, etc.);
  • for any other diseases and conditions caused by high histamine levels.

Contraindications for the use of Kestin

The drug is not prescribed:

  • with increased sensitivity of the body to substances included in the composition of Kestin;
  • during pregnancy and breastfeeding ;
  • children: film-coated tablets - up to 12 years, lyophilized tablets - up to 15 years;
  • for phenylketonuria - lyophilized tablets.

The drug is prescribed with caution in case of impaired renal and liver function, as well as in patients with coronary heart disease and hypokalemia . Since it can cause drowsiness and difficulty concentrating in some patients, they should not drive a car during the course of treatment.

Features of use during pregnancy and lactation

A pregnant patient should be wary of allergic reactions. Everyone knows that a child can inherit this disease.

The effect of Ebastine on the body of pregnant and lactating women has not yet been studied.

Given this information, it is impossible to say whether the drug is safe or harmful. If necessary, the doctor can prescribe medications if they do not harm the baby’s development and have a positive effect on the mother’s health.

How to choose a good allergy remedy

Side effects of Kestin

The drug is well tolerated by patients and rarely produces side effects. However, they may be:

  • from the central nervous system this is headache , drowsiness or insomnia , lethargy , weakness , decreased performance ;
  • from the gastrointestinal tract - various digestive disorders , nausea , abdominal pain, dry mouth;
  • from the ENT organs - runny nose, sinusitis , frontal sinusitis;
  • allergic reactions - most often in the form of urticaria .

Alcohol compatibility

The names of the drug are easy to remember. Doctors do not recommend taking any medications with alcohol. Alcoholic drinks can inhibit the effect of medications. In this case, the capsule can act faster because the shell dissolves faster.

Drinks that may contain a small amount of alcohol are also prohibited.

You shouldn't risk your own health. It is worth remembering that any combination of alcohol and medications can cause severe symptoms.

Kestin - instructions for use

Film-coated tablets are taken orally once a day (the intake may not be associated with food). For adults and adolescents over 15 years of age, the drug is prescribed no more than 20 mg (1-2 tablets of 10 mg or ½ - 1 tablet of 20 mg). Adolescents 12-15 years old are prescribed 10 mg (1 tablet of 10 mg or ½ tablet of 20 mg) once a day.

Instructions for use of Kestin recommend using lyophilized tablets for resorption in the oral cavity (placed on the tongue, where the tablet quickly dissolves). Taking lozenges is also not associated with food; these tablets should not be washed down. Lyophilized tablets are prescribed to adults and adolescents over 15 years of age in the same dosage as film-coated tablets. The tablets are fragile, so they should be removed from the blister with care to avoid damage.

How does Kestin differ from other antihistamines?

Currently, many different drugs are produced aimed at eliminating allergies or preventing them.

It is quite difficult to select the most effective one and this can only be done correctly under the guidance of a doctor after completing all the studies.

The medicine Kestin must also be prescribed for use by an allergist and, first of all, it is prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Year-round or seasonal rhinitis that occurs under the influence of different groups of allergens;
  • Allergic conjunctivitis;
  • For Quincke's edema and urticaria. Allergic disease caused by physical factors, that is, direct sunlight, cold, overheating, can also be treated;
  • Any diseases that develop under the influence of histamine produced in the body.

Dermatitis

Taking Kestin provides a rapid therapeutic effect; a noticeable reduction in symptoms is observed within one hour after taking the required therapeutic dose.

The medicine Kestin has a number of additional advantages:

  • The drug can be taken once a day, its therapeutic effect lasts for 48 hours;
  • For long-term treatment with Kestin, an intermittent treatment regimen is used. The medicine must be taken daily in the required dosage for 5 days, then take a break for two days. This use became possible due to the fact that with long-term use, ebastine accumulates in the body and then its therapeutic, antihistamine effect is expressed within 72 hours;
  • There is no need to take the medicine with water; the tablet dissolves easily and quickly in the mouth under the influence of salivary enzymes. Due to this, Kestin is convenient to use while traveling;
  • The drug does not affect the reaction rate and therefore treatment with it is possible when driving vehicles and other complex mechanisms.

When prescribing a medicine, the doctor must take into account the patient's use of other medications and select a treatment regimen accordingly.

Interaction of Kestin with other drugs

Kestin film-coated tablets are incompatible:

  • with antifungal drugs ( fluconazole , ketoconazole , etc.) , antibiotics from the macrolide group ( erythromycin , clarithromycin , etc.) and alcohol-containing drugs - due to an increase in the concentration of Kestin in the blood and the risk of developing heart complications;
  • with the antiasthmatic drug theophylline ;
  • indirect anticoagulants;
  • antiulcer drug C imethidine ;
  • tranquilizer Diazepam ; _
  • any alcohol-containing drugs.

Lyophilized tablets are incompatible with Ketoconazole and Erythromycin , but can be used simultaneously with Theophylline, indirect anticoagulants, Cimetidine, Diazepam and alcohol-containing drugs.

Kestin and alcohol - the danger of combining antihistamines and alcohol

Stories from our readers

Saved the family from a terrible curse. My Seryozha hasn’t drunk for a year now. We struggled with his addiction for a long time and unsuccessfully tried a lot of remedies over these long 7 years when he started drinking. But we made it through, and thanks to everyone.

Antihistamines are medications aimed at blocking allergic reactions. As a rule, taking such drugs lasts for a long period. Therefore, questions about their compatibility with alcohol are common. Against the background of such therapy, it is necessary to understand in detail what we are dealing with.

Antihistamines: what are they and what is the difference

Any allergy is caused by the action of histamine. These are special crystals that are found in any organism. They can be active or linked (inactive). The latter play an important role in the life of every living organism.

But an increase in active histamines in the body causes unpleasant consequences. Their number increases when a person is exposed to an allergen. Due to an increase in the concentration of free histamines, blood pressure sometimes decreases, breathing becomes difficult, and swelling appears.

That is, allergy symptoms occur.

Antihistamines specifically combat the release of bound histamines. And this prevents side effects from occurring. These medications do not cure the disease, but only fight its symptoms. What is also important is that if a person with a similar disease does not take the pills on time, anaphylactic shock may occur.

Patients often believe that by taking antihistamines, they can easily come into contact with allergens: eating citrus fruits, drinking milk, smelling flowers, etc. This is a dangerous misconception. The patient should avoid constant irritants even if he drinks medicine.

The first generation of these products became available back in 1936, making life much easier for people with allergies. Since then, a lot of other drugs have been developed with a similar effect, but more effective.

The first allergy medications worked quickly and were just as effective in treating severe symptoms. But their medicinal properties quickly wore off, and the drugs themselves had a lot of side effects.

Despite the fact that many countries have long switched to gentler drugs, we still use them. Among them: Diphenhydramine, Suprastin, Diazolin, Fenkarol, etc.

The second generation was distinguished by a longer lasting therapeutic effect. The number of doses and dosage became smaller, and undesirable consequences appeared less frequently. Unlike their predecessors, these drugs were not accompanied by strong sedative properties.

Third and fourth generations of antihistamines are used throughout the world and are the best tools in the fight against allergies. They are characterized by a particularly long-lasting effect (1 tablet per day) and a short list of side effects. These include:

Reviews about Kestin

Kestin is widely used for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases and conditions. Most reviews of this drug are positive: Kestin helps many people cope with seasonal and year-round allergic diseases.

However, there are also patients for whom Kestin is not suitable: it does not prevent the development of allergic reactions in them and does not reduce their occurrence. This feature of antiallergic drugs is well known to doctors: they must be selected individually for each patient.

There are reviews that Kestin has side effects such as lethargy , drowsiness and dry mouth . But such reviews are rare, since most patients do not experience side effects from taking the recommended doses of Kestin.

Ebastine, Cetirizine, Loratadine, Kestin - which is better for allergies?

Each allergic symptom requires the use of a specific medication. If you choose Ebastine or Loratadine, then both of these drugs deserve attention. They eliminate almost all manifestations of allergic reactions. These medications are available to every patient due to their low cost. Loratidine is often used to eliminate urticaria, allergic rhinitis, and conjunctivitis. Desloratadine is a universal and non-hormonal substitute for Ebastine.

Kestin is produced in syrup form, so it is suitable for children over 6 years of age. This drug is the same Ebastine. These drugs are considered synonyms.

A drug similar in effect is Cetirizine. It also blocks histamine. Taken for Quincke's edema, hay fever, hay fever. No sedative effect is observed during treatment. When choosing Ebastine or Cetirizine, you should pay attention to both drugs.

The manufacturer of Kestin, the Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda, on its website dedicated to this drug, in addition to detailed instructions and answers to questions about Kestin, conducts pollen monitoring of all regions of Russia (the project was developed by Russian scientists together with specialists from the pharmaceutical company Takeda).

Kestin and pollen monitoring are closely related, since the latter allows you to find out everything about the flowering of plants in any corner of our country. Accurate information about the flowering of a plant in a particular region that causes seasonal allergies (hay fever) will allow allergy sufferers to promptly leave for a safer place or refuse to travel to dangerous regions. If it is impossible to avoid contact with allergens, then antiallergic medications, including Kestin, will come to the rescue.
