Bay leaf medicinal properties and contraindications for dermatitis in infants

Diet of a nursing mother

As mentioned, in treating a baby it is necessary to use an integrated approach.
In addition to using medicines and traditional medicine advice, a nursing mother is advised to review her menu. It is worth taking into account that foods consumed by a woman reach breast milk from 3 to 24 hours. This information will help identify the existing allergen that is causing the child's reaction. A woman’s diet should be balanced, but eliminate the risk of a possible reaction in the infant.

The following products need to be removed from the diet:

  • Products containing cocoa, including chocolate
  • Egg
  • Citrus fruit
  • Milk
  • Nuts
  • Berries
  • Fish and seafood
  • Bakery products (except rye bread)
  • Tomatoes, carrots

Recommended products for consumption:

  • Porridges (pearl barley, barley, rice, buckwheat) cooked in water
  • Rye bread
  • Oat cookies
  • Cereal soups
  • Dried fruits and compotes
  • Boiled veal and turkey meat
  • Apples and watermelons
  • Green and black tea
  • Low fat cottage cheese

In addition, it is recommended to use herbs and spices that have a calming effect (mint, lemon balm, oregano, basil).

Breakfast: Oatmeal, apple (green or yellow), weak tea.

Second breakfast: Cottage cheese and compote

Lunch: Soup with pasta, rice with boiled meat, compote.

Afternoon snack: Cottage cheese and jelly.

Dinner: Stewed vegetables with veal meatballs, tea or compote.

From the permitted products you can create a complete and varied menu for every day. It is recommended to boil or steam the dishes.

It is very important not to treat the diet as torture, because it is temporary and aimed at the baby’s recovery.

Artificial children also need to establish control over food, namely formula. With atopic dermatitis, much attention is paid to this issue, since it is quite difficult to choose a suitable mixture for a child.

There are three types of mixtures on the market recommended for atopic dermatitis:

  1. Based on the milk of some animals (goat, camel).
  2. On soy protein. This group is enriched with a vitamin-mineral complex, does not contain lactose, and does not cause colic or problems with stool. Very popular among mothers of newborns with lactose or animal protein intolerance.
  3. Mixtures with high protein hydrolysis (listed as medicinal). They have a bitter, unpleasant taste and are prescribed for severe atopy.

You should not select the mixture yourself; a consultation with a pediatrician is required, as well as an allergy test! Children with a confirmed diagnosis should be under constant supervision of a specialist. Complementary feeding is introduced at the same time as for children on mother's milk, but with great caution and in small doses. It is recommended to keep a food diary, which will make it easier to identify the allergen in the future.

Relapse prevention includes:

  • Environmental control
  • Compliance with nutrition standards
  • Clinical examination by an allergist
  • Immunological blood test twice a year
  • Taking an annual allergy test
  • The right approach to skin care
  • Carry out anti-inflammatory therapy

Thus, by providing all the necessary conditions for the child’s growth, the course of the disease can be completely controlled. These simple and understandable rules will become the basis for the health and development of the baby. Compliance with all standards and effective therapy for atopic dermatitis promotes recovery at an early age.

It is important to remember that only a doctor makes a diagnosis and selects a suitable (individual) treatment program.

Proper care for a baby with atopic dermatitis

Increased hydration of the affected areas of the skin is necessary; it is better to choose creams and lotions with nutrients. But do not forget that the chosen products must be hypoallergenic. The market offers lines for allergy sufferers, which include not only skin care products, but also washing powders, shampoos, and bath gels. All of them are aimed at moisturizing and preventing the skin from drying out.

The child should be bathed in filtered clean water (without a washcloth); if the pediatrician allows, you can add herbal infusions. But bathing shouldn't be a daily ritual.

Walking in the fresh air, a normal microclimate in the family, and good, sufficient night and daytime sleep are recommended.

Laurel decoctions

Pour 25 grams of bay leaf into 1 liter of boiling water, boil for 10 minutes, then cover with a lid and leave for an hour. Soak the gauze in the broth, apply it to the affected areas, wrap it with a bandage and leave for an hour. We perform the procedure 2 times a day.

Children should take laurel baths to eliminate symptoms of diseases. To do this, pour 15 grams of bay leaf with 2 liters of boiling water, boil for 15 minutes. Add the decoction to a bath of water and bathe the child for 15 minutes. After using the decoctions, the skin must be well moistened with vegetable oil (preferably olive or flaxseed).

Children suffer from allergies - bay leaf will relieve symptoms

I am glad to meet you again, dear readers. I often communicate online with parents who use folk remedies to treat various diseases. I am the mother of two sons. Both suffered from atopic dermatitis in infancy. Today I’ll talk about how bay leaves help against allergies in children.

Allergic reactions in infants occur for various reasons: immaturity of the digestive and immune systems. Manifestations range from mild, external forms to severe symptoms such as bronchospasm or laryngeal edema. In a newborn, the following are more often observed:

  • Skin reactions such as pinpoint rash, redness of the anus, weeping spots, peeling of the upper layer of the epidermis;
  • Digestive disorders - loose, foamy stools with mucus, undigested lumps, bloating, severe colic;
  • Hoarseness of voice;
  • Wet or dry cough.

Only a doctor can determine what is happening to the baby. If your baby has problems, find a competent, intelligent pediatrician. He will already advise whether it is worth contacting an allergist.

Bay leaf for atopic dermatitis in infants

In folk medicine, laurel is used as an immunostimulating, antimicrobial, diuretic and sedative. I was more interested in its ability to relieve skin manifestations of atopic dermatitis and eliminate itching. By the way, I learned about the healing properties of the plant at an appointment with an allergist, a professor, with whom, in desperation, I made an appointment with my first son.

The doctor suggested a recipe to me, following which I managed to improve my skin condition. The dryness has gone away, the redness and flaking have disappeared. Pour a glass of boiling water into a saucepan, throw in 5 medium-sized dry leaves, boil for 5 minutes over low heat, adding water as it evaporates. The decoction is consumed as needed. Cotton swabs are moistened and wiped over areas affected by atopic dermatitis. Store for a day in a cool, dark place.

But more often I prepared the infusion according to a different recipe. It is convenient to use for daily bathing of infants. 100 g of dry raw materials are steamed in a thermos with boiling water (1 liter), and allowed to brew for a day. In the evening add to water. A liter was usually used for a large bath for newborns; half the volume would be enough for a small one.

An important point: to achieve results, do not rinse the baby after bathing (I doused it with pre-drawn water and a decoction). Excess moisture is removed with a well-absorbing towel. According to reviews from other mothers of children with allergies, the product is excellent for diaper dermatitis and allergic contact skin reactions.

The healing properties of bay leaf have found application in folk medicine for the treatment of allergic cough and rhinitis. How to brew laurel to obtain an infusion suitable for internal consumption? Almost the same as in previous cases.

Add 500 ml of boiling water to 20 g of raw material and leave in a thermos for 6-8 hours. A three-month-old baby is given the drug with 2 drops 3 times a day, increasing the dosage to a teaspoon by the year. Adults are recommended to take 50 ml of decoction. The course lasts 6 months. When the main signs of allergy go away, they switch to a different regimen: ten-day maintenance therapy once a month.

I can’t answer the question in the affirmative whether bay leaves help with allergies. In folk medicine there is no universal cure. It suited my children. In any case, before you start taking it you need to:

  • Consult your doctor;
  • Conduct a test to identify possible individual intolerance to the plant (apply a drop of infusion to the skin); if a reaction occurs, do not treat;
  • Purchase high-quality raw materials (I bought several bundles at once at the market when I was on vacation at sea in the summer).

Properties of bay tree leaves

The amazing properties of laurel help improve the condition of patients even with incurable diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Thanks to a large number of essential oils, the plant has an original taste and aroma.

The bay tree loves the sun very much. It can be grown at home in a flower pot, but it will not have as many useful minerals.

A decoction of bay leaves for dermatitis in infants is completely safe for the baby’s skin.

At the same time, its antibacterial and antiseptic properties do an excellent job of healing diaper rash, dermatitis, irritations and other skin rashes.

Medicinal properties of laurel:

  • Boosting immunity.
  • Improving the functioning of systems that remove waste, toxins, processed and undigested substances by the body.
  • Regulation of the nervous system.
  • Removing inflammatory processes.
  • Interfering with the activity of harmful microorganisms.
  • Reducing the number of abnormal tissue formations.
  • Improving the functioning of the digestive tract.

If you use bay leaf for dermatitis in children, then this should only be an external treatment.

However, children from 2 years old can periodically add a couple of leaves to a 3-liter pan as a seasoning for soup, meat stew, jellied fish or stewed vegetables.

Bay laurel baths for atopic dermatitis are very useful during exacerbations. Adults are advised to use this remedy also for prevention, improving metabolism, losing weight, and relieving inflammatory processes.

How to recognize atopic dermatitis?

There is an opinion that the disease is transmitted by bottle-fed children, but this is a myth, since the percentage of dermatitis in breastfed babies is rapidly growing. Timely diagnosis will allow you to easily get rid of the first manifestations of the disease.

The main signs may be:

  • Redness, itching, peeling: neck, cheeks, back, elbows and knees, buttocks
  • Dry skin
  • Getting wet
  • Peeling of the scalp and face
  • Nodular rash
  • Local change in cover color
  • Thin, sensitive skin, prone to cracks and damage.

A newborn will not be able to tell his parents about inconvenience or pain, so you need to pay attention to the baby’s behavior. In particular, on his mood, sleep and appetite. But many attribute the presence of these symptoms to diathesis.

Contraindications

The well-known spice, like many other herbs, has its contraindications; it is undesirable to use it for pancreatitis, gastric ulcers, and a tendency to constipation.

At the same time, using bay leaves for allergies can help during pregnancy or during breastfeeding - the plant will not harm the body of the mother and child.

An allergic reaction of any type that appears for the first time requires a complete diagnosis of the body. The use of any folk remedies does not mean that there is no need for antihistamine therapy with medications.

Modern medicine has innovative technologies that help identify a number of allergens; in many cases, their effect on the body can be easily eliminated.

This will allow you not to experience the painful symptoms of an unusual reaction of the body.

Bay leaf for dermatitis in infants

I am glad to meet you again, dear readers. I often communicate online with parents who use folk remedies to treat various diseases. I am the mother of two sons. Both suffered from atopic dermatitis in infancy. Today I’ll talk about how bay leaves help against allergies in children.

Non-drug

First of all, it is necessary to eliminate all allergens in the diet. A nursing mother should change her diet. For formula-fed children, it is better to switch to dairy-free formulas and eliminate cow's milk. It is also necessary to review baby care products for washing clothes; all of this should be hypoallergenic. Again, there will be a need to control the temperature and humidity in the house. The optimal temperature is not lower than 22 degrees with a humidity of 50-70%.

Medication

If the above measures do not help, drug therapy is prescribed, which in turn comes in two types: local and systemic approach.

Local consists of applying creams and ointments to the affected areas of the skin (only as prescribed by a doctor):

  • Anti-inflammatory ointments contain substances that prevent the inflammatory process.
  • Antimicrobial creams contain antibiotics and antiseptics that destroy bacteria on the surface of the skin.
  • Wet compresses using antibiotics and antiseptics.

Systemic therapy consists of taking medications:

  • Antibiotics are aimed at destroying and removing pathogenic bacteria from the body.
  • Antihistamines help reduce the allergic reaction.
  • Glucocorticoids (hormonal drugs) can quickly reduce the external manifestations of the disease, but are not intended for long-term use. The recommended course is no more than two weeks.
  • Sedatives calm the nervous system and have a mild hypnotic effect.

Treatment with folk remedies can also become a real lifesaver. But before using even the most harmless herbal preparations, you must consult your doctor!

According to doctors, recipes for preparing baths, ointments, and infusions from natural remedies are best used as an additional aid to treatment, as well as in moments of exacerbation of symptoms. But it is unacceptable to use it as the only type of therapy, without consulting a doctor.

  1. Herbal baths.
  • Pour boiling water over four tablespoons of chamomile (per liter) and let steep for 2-3 hours.
  • One tablespoon of string per glass of water brought to a boil, leave for 15 minutes.
  • For a glass of hot water, one spoon of starch (potato or rice), stir well before use.
  • Dissolve five tablespoons of salt (sea salt) in the prepared bathtub.
  • Infuse a handful of nettles. Attention! The permissible bath time is no more than 10 minutes.
  • Boil 5 tablespoons of sage for about 30 minutes. Let it brew for 2 hours (store the finished infusion in a cool place).
  1. Compresses
  • Mix equal parts freshly squeezed celery juice with apple cider vinegar, add a pinch of salt (table salt). Apply lotions to the affected areas for 5 minutes every two hours. If the condition worsens, apply in a course of one week.
  • Brew 3-4 bay leaves. Apply the resulting solution to the child’s skin for two weeks.
  • Infuse a small amount of calendula flowers and apply to problem areas.
  • Compress to relieve itching. Apply a lotion with potato juice to the affected areas and leave overnight. The procedure is carried out once a day until the condition improves.
  • Make a mixture of herbs in equal proportions (celandine, St. John's wort, yarrow), brew with boiling water, let it brew. Make lotions from the strained and cooled broth onto the affected areas.
  • Mix hops and a teaspoon each, cook in 150 ml of water over low heat for 10 minutes. Leave for 2 hours out of reach of light.
  1. For drinking.
  • Take 5 ml of fresh celery juice 15 minutes before meals. The course of administration is 2 times a day for a week.
  • Prepare an infusion of hops in a ratio of 1 to 4. Drink 50 ml before meals. Attention! It may cause side effects (vomiting and nausea).
  • 5 tablespoons of viburnum per liter of water (leave for 24 hours). Drink one glass a day, not in large sips, for two weeks. Contraindicated for children under six months of age.
  • Combine 10 ml of St. John's wort juice with 20 grams of melted butter. Apply the resulting ointment to the affected areas at least 2 times a day. Store the finished product in a cool place.
  • Mix calendula juice with lanolin in a ratio of 1 to 10.
  • Combine baby powder with 30 grams of white clay. Apply for 20 minutes 3-4 times a day. After use, moisturize the skin with nourishing cream.
  • Mix two tablespoons of sea buckthorn oil with a quarter cup of animal fat. Store in a cool place.
  • Rubbing the skin with aloe vera juice.

Feedback from parents about traditional medicine is not clear. Most people agree that these recipes will only help alleviate the baby’s condition, but they cannot do without medications.

Treatment options

Methods of using this herbal medicine vary for individual age groups, as well as depending on the type of disease.

It can be used externally and internally. Let's consider the treatment of atopic dermatitis with bay leaves in children and adults.

For children under 2 years of age

The product has a strong cleansing effect, both diuretic and removes from the intestines, so bay leaves cannot be used internally for atopic dermatitis in infants.

Bay leaf is often used in aromatherapy, treating rooms with its vapors. In the case of children under 2 years old, this cannot be done.

The optimal use is bay leaf bathing for atopic dermatitis in infants.

  1. To do this, brew 3-5 leaves with boiling water and cover with a lid.
  2. After 20 minutes, the infusion can be added to a bath of water.
  3. The baby should be in such water for no longer than 20 minutes.
  4. Then wash it with baby soap and be sure to rinse with clean water.

Use laurel baths for atopic dermatitis in infants no more than 2 times a week. Between these procedures, bathe your baby in a decoction of string and chamomile.
